Optional Study Tour Programme

This year the study tour programme will showcase two different sites, the Radiumhospitalet and the new hospital for mental health care at Nordbyhagen (AHUS Hospital).  Both sites will be visited during the tour, with a provisional itinerary as follows:

08:30 Departure from the Holmenkollen Park hotel;

09:00 – 11:00 Radiumhospitalet visit;

12:00 – 14:30 Nordbyhagen visit (including lunch);

14:30 Transport to Oslo airport or return to Oslo centre/Holmenkollen Park hotel.

These projects (the latter, in the final phase of completion) are major infrastructure investments that have been shaped by the most up-to-date models of care for oncology and mental health/substance misuse, and use the latest in tools and technologies for planning, designing and constructing health facilities.

Tour participants will be provided with coach transport, and will be able to leave luggage in the coach(es) during the visits.

The Radiumhospitalet is a part of Oslo University Hospital and is a specialised cancer hospital with local, regional and national functions. It is one of Europe’s leading cancer hospitals, and has for many decades been in the forefront of:

  • Radiation therapy

  • Cancer surgery

  • Experimental Cancer Treatment

  • Development of new drugs and therapies.

The Radiumhospitalet has extensive and internationally recognised research activity. The Oslo Cancer Cluster, which is an international network for innovation in oncology, is affiliated with the hospital. The new building at the Norwegian Radiumhospitalet is an important part of the development of Oslo University Hospital HF, as one of six new construction projects. The building contains both a new facility for proton treatment, as well as other clinical functions such as radiology, surgery, wards and outpatient clinics.

The Radiumhospitalet was established in 1932 and has been extended in several phases. Large parts of the hospital buildings were old and discarded and the need for new and updated patient areas was urgent. Construction of the new clinical building and proton center started in 2020 and were completed in 2024. They are now integrated parts in a comprehensive hospital facility. The new and existing buildings are connected in several places. A new main entrance which gives access both to the new and existing buildings, has been established.

The new clinic and proton building consists of four building parts that are connected to the existing building and therefore appear as one hospital. The new building is approximately 45,000 m 2 and contains:

  • 155 beds

  • 10 operating theatres

  • 111 outpatient rooms

  • 3 proton treatment rooms, including 1 research room

Project cost: NOK 6,178 million (price adjusted December 2024)
